June 2021 Newsletter

We are in the coldest part of the year, so spare a thought for all the animals spending their days and nights outside.

In our June Newsletter, we have a huge list of actions that you can take to support animals and the environment - state members' meeting, survey on rehoming pets, submissions to the wildlife act review, email petitions MPs & Melbourne City Councillors and info about nominating to be a political candidate in the Federal Election. We also have a brand new merchandise item you can buy!

CONTRIBUTE TO THE WILDLIFE ACT REVIEW

THE WILDLIFE ACT 1975 SETS THE RULES AROUND HOW PEOPLE INTERACT WITH WILDLIFE IN VICTORIA - AND IT HASN’T BEEN REVIEWED SINCE IT BECAME LAW MORE THAN 45 YEARS AGO!

An independent panel is calling on all members of the Victorian community to have their say on what changes to the Act are necessary to establish a modern, best-practice regulatory framework for wildlife on the Engage Victoria website. The issues they're asking for feedback on are listed on a Fact Sheet and discussed in an Issues Paper. By providing feedback, you can help inform recommendations for modernising the current Wildlife Act.

This is your chance to let the Government know what community values and expectations are for wildlife!

The number of issues affecting wildlife in Victoria can seem overwhelming and it is not necessary to cover everything in your submission. You may feel unsure what to say, or worry that because you are not an ‘expert’ in a particular area your words may not carry enough weight. However, this is a community consultation process and they want to hear what you have to say. Who better to speak up for animals than an AJP Supporter?!

THERE ARE THREE WAYS YOU CAN MAKE A SUBMISSION:

Make a general comment using a simple feedback form - Short on time? Pick one issue and tell them what you think!

Provide detailed answers to specific issues that have been outlined - Give feedback on some or all of the questions outlined in the Issues Paper.

Upload a full submission as an attachment - Submissions from wildlife advocates carry weight. Please consider taking the time to make an extensive submission.

NEED MORE ADVICE? We have created a supporting document to help you make a submission. Click here to download

WE'RE HOSTING A SPECIAL MEETING TO HELP WITH SUBMISSIONS! Thursday 24th June, 6.30pm-7.30pm. Click here to RSVP

REHOMING PETS SURVEY CLOSES 24th JUNE

The task force for rehoming pets is the result of the Animal Justice Party campaign to reform pounds and shelters in Victoria and the successful motion presented by Andy Meddick MLC in October last year. Andy himself is the chair of the task force. What a great demonstration of having elected AJP MPs in Parliament!

Members of the Victorian community, particularly those involved in pet rehoming, are invited to contribute to the work of the Taskforce by completing its community consultation survey. As part of the survey, respondents will be asked a series of questions focused on gathering information, views and issues to improve and better support the rehoming of pets in Victoria.

Please complete the survey to provide the government with this important feedback.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR PET RESCUE GROUPS

Another round of Government funding is available now for not-for-profit and community organisations who rehome pets, provide low-cost veterinary services or provide free or low-cost desexing programs. Please encourage any organisations that you support who work in this important space to apply. Click here to learn more about the Animal Welfare Fund Grants Program.

ACTIVE EMAIL CAMPAIGNS TO SUPPORT

We have made it easy for our members and supporters to lobby the decision-makers on campaigns we're running. So far, tens of thousands of emails have made it to the inboxes of Victorian Parliamentarians and Melbourne City Councillors.

Let's keep up this pressure. Please sign each of the email petitions and share the pages to your social media feeds.

SCRAP THE CRUEL ATCW PERMIT SYSTEM - Sign to call on the Minister for Environment to ensure a critical and detailed review of the Authority to Control Wildlife program.

DEMAND JUSTICE FOR THE KANGAROO KILLED WITH MACHINERY - Sign the petition calling on the Minister for Environment to act

MELBOURNE CITY: LOVE ANIMALS, BAN FUR! - Email the City of Melbourne councillors today to regulate the sale of 'faux' fur is to ban genuine animal fur altogether.

HORSE-DRAWN VEHICLES MUST GO! - Send a letter to the decision-makers that allow horse-drawn vehicles to remain on our city streets.

STOP KILLING KANGAROOS - EMAIL YOUR MP -  Stop the Victorian Government's plan to shoot thousands of kangaroos for human consumption

SAVE THE KINLEY KANGAROOS - EMAIL THE DEVELOPERS - This is a landmark case that will likely impact the outcome for other landlocked mobs.

BAN DUCK SHOOTING - EMAIL YOUR MP - It's time: Ban recreational duck shooting in Victoria!

There are more animal issues that our volunteers are working on and more that are being advocated for in Parliament by Andy's team. To hear how you can get more involved, please attend your next regional group members' meeting. For more info, please go to our regional groups' page.

CALL FOR LOWER HOUSE CANDIDATES CLOSES THIS FRIDAY

We have never been in a better position to win our first Senate seat. With an AJP Senator, we would finally have a real chance to end live animal exports and so much more. We can’t do this without you! It is critical to get AJP candidates to run for all or most of the lower house seats to bolster our Senate vote.

Winning a Senate seat for the AJP is not the only aim. Standing as an AJP candidate raises public awareness of animal cruelty and of the Party's mission. Please help make a difference on federal issues involving animals and nature by applying to be a candidate in your electorate!

Will you be a candidate for Animal Justice Party at the next Federal Election?!

MAKE A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION BEFORE JUNE 30TH

The Animal Justice Party relies on donations from our members and supporters to be able to contest elections and every donation helps to pressure the major parties to make positive legislative change for animals. Let's continue that pressure to get further protection for native animals, and for farmed animals subject to live animal exports.

Can you donate so we can stand as many candidates in as many seats as possible? With your support, we can power up our campaign and advocate for bold action on live export and protection for animals and the environment. Any contribution, big or small, will make a huge difference.

*Donations up to $1500 are tax-deductible. Please help us with a donation before the end of the financial year.
