Kangaroos are one of Australia’s most iconic, loved and unique animals. They are also the victims of the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife on the planet and in 2021 it’s estimated that 192,000 kangaroos are to be killed under programs authorised by the Victorian Government!
On Wed 10th Feb 21, we hosted an urgent webinar to highlight the issue and the efforts being taken to stop the killing. We also listed actions that you can do to help as:
- Regional Victorians who may be confronted by shooting in their vicinity
- Concerned voters who want to take political actions
- Community members wanting to undertake direct local action

Animal Justice Party member and Kangaroo advocate Cr Charlie Vincent joined Peter Hylands from Australian Wildlife Protection Council to discuss the current situation and the efforts that have been made to-date by NGO’s such as AWPC to raise awareness of the issue and to stop the killing. They wrapped up their discussion with actions Regional Victorians can take if confronted with shooting in their community.
Animal Justice Party’s elected representative to the Victorian Parliament, Andy Meddick MLC, discussed the background to the legislation and the actions being taken by his team and other advocates at Spring St to stop the killing. He will also provide a list of recommended actions that people can take in the political space to support efforts to stop kangaroos being killed.
Award-winning documentary filmmaker, Mick McIntyre from Kangaroos Alive shared the efforts being taken globally to end the consumption of kangaroo products and provided examples of effective local direct actions that have raised awareness of the issue. Hopefully, this will inspire you to get directly involved to stop the killing.
Dr Nadine Richings, our National Campaign Manager for Kangaroos, gives her thanks to all attendees and provides additional information that people can do to support the campaigns of the Animal Justice Party.
