Shan is a Victorian who grew up in in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne and currently resides in Maribyrnong. Shan has a background in organic chemistry, completing his PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2013. He has been lecturing at Trinity College at the University of Melbourne for the past four years.
Shan has been vegan for over a decade and has been involved in the Animal Justice Party for several years, and this will be his first time running as a candidate for the party. Shan would like to work towards establishing a new moral status for non-human animals that often reflected in our society’s innate kindness and compassion towards our companion animals, but which is unfortunately not extended to animals that we consume, wear or use for entertainment, despite there being no meaningful difference between the species of animals involved.
Shan would like to ensure that all future legislation involving animals is scrutinised by an Independent Office of Animal Welfare. This is essential given the trend towards increasingly clandestine agricultural practices which prevent the public from seeing the worst abuses in the industry. Shan would also like to work towards putting an end to greyhound racing, jumps racing, duck shooting and puppy mills.
